Footloose and Fancy Free

What inspired the title for this post, you may ask? Because the song Footloose was on the radio when I came home from school. That's it. Pretty unremarkable.
Anticlimaxes aside, I want to share something very personal about myself with you all. Why would I post my deepest darkest secrets on the internet, you ask? The answer is very simple. This thing isn't a secret to me. It's not something I'm trying to hide. It's not something I care to kept locked up, because I'm not ashamed, I'm not embarrassed and I really think it's not a big deal.
Last year I was diagnosed with clinical depression and started taking prescription meds for it. At the time it felt like a huge relief, because I always knew something was off with me, I just never knew what. Depression runs in the family so I could've seen it coming, I just never knew it was a possibility. The meds helped immensely, and depression doesn't take over my life anymore, so I'm glad for that!
At the risk of sounding like a Cymbalta commercial, I'm going to move on.
   Clothes! Outfits! Happy stuff! Yay.
My cat finally decided to cooperate. Congratulations, Cricket. You're famous.
Today I wanted to be comfortable and cute, and what better way to go about that than with a maxi skirt? I've actually never owned a maxi skirt until now (behind on the trend, I know) and I never really liked the look until I saw this one at Nordstrom's junior department, BP (no, BP is not paying me to talk about their stuff all the time. I just like it.). What I liked about this skirt is that it's a wooly sweater material which makes it perfect for winter! Sadly, I won't be able to wear it in the summer, but I live in Oregon so it's almost never summer.
And here we see Cricket trying to wiggle out of my grasp.

Of course my mom had to take the picture when I looked down...
There you have it folks. My outfit of the day from 2/11/13. Hope you enjoy, and stay tuned for some grade A Valentine's Day posts!
   Until we meet again,
Janae

Prom? Nordstrom? Blasphemy!

Alright narwhals, I've got something near and dear to my heart that I must share with you. Nordstrom's junior department, BP is currently selling prom dresses! If you're wondering why I'm so buzzed about this, it's because I'm on the BP fashion board. What is the BP fashion board? What is the BP fashion? What is the BP? What is the? What is? What?
BP fashion board is a board of high school age kids (mostly girls but there's one guy) who meet once a month at a certain BP location to talk about trends, fashion news and upcoming things in BP. I don't think all states have a board, but Oregon does, so yippee! A month or two ago we talked about prom at one of the meetings and what we'd think about BP selling prom dresses, and now they're selling them! It feels really cool to see that Nordstrom has been listening to our feedback and took it into consideration.
I've looked at the dresses and they're all really beautiful! There are tons of styles online for every body type and every price point!
Of course, I didn't mention this just to give Nordstrom a shoutout. I also wanted to share some of my favorite dresses!

Trixxi Sequin&Tulle Party Dress, $78.00
I absolutely adore this dress. Everything about it works for me. The sequins, the tulle at the bottom, the color, the silhouette. Of all the dresses they have, I think this one is my favorite. I'd pair it with glittery gold pumps to match the top of the dress and a wavy side fishtail braid.

As U Wish Strapless Sequin Ombre Mermaid Gown, $118.00
This dress really stood out to me because I love the ombre effect with the sequins. It really looks like a mermaid's dress! It would look really good on a tall and slim girl with strappy silver heels and wavy long hair, like a mermaid. This would also look fantastic on a girl with teal tips on her hair!

Hailey by Adriana Papell Embellished Jersey Gown, $129.00
This dress is absolutely stunning. It's very sophisticated with a little sex appeal from the lace cutout and the leg slit. It would look gorgeous with a red pump, red lip, cat eye and a deep side part.
Jessica McClintock Strapless Lace & Tulle Dress, $115.00
I love how adorable this dress is. It's really playful and fun but the black lace gives it some sophistication. Really great for prom. This one would look great with black heels and a voluptuous top bun.
Pisarro Nights Beaded Illusion Cocktail Dress, $148.00
Of course I love this dress. Though it doesn't scream "prom", how could I pass up a 20's style flapper dress? Love it. It evokes thoughts of hazy speakeasies and chill jazz bars. This one would look great with t-strap heels, a faux bob (there are some great tutorials on youtube) and a cute headband. Avoid feathered headbands and feather boas so it doesn't look like you're wearing a costume.

The Spirit of Suburbia

This is Janae. This is her cat.

Hello humans of this earth who somehow stubbled across the undiscovered glory that is this blog. Nice to meet you. I'm Janae and I'll be your guide through this intense journey of self discovery, so sit back, relax and let me get behind the wheel.
I sincerely hope you all realize that that first paragraph was complete bullshit. Except for the undiscovered glory part. And my name really is Janae. But, you know. Details.
I feel as if I'm compelled to give some sort of introduction but I haven't the slightest idea what to say. So, without further ado, let's get on to the outfit pictures, eh?
Let me just fix my hair and stand awkwardly for this picture

Fun fact: When this picture was being taken I was staring at my adorable kitten.

Speak of the devil.
I tried taking some cute pictures with the little devil and he kept trying to escape!

So there you have it. Today's outfit wasn't too exciting due to the fact that I didn't do anything all day, so don't get used to this simplistic style. Until tomorrow. Adieu!
